The concept of civic literacy was brought to my attention this morning by my friend and fellow service-learning enthusiast, Jennifer Nutefall. Perhaps I've been living under a rock. I've heard dozens of kinds of literacy in recent years (digital literacy, media literacy, transliteracy, financial literacy, etc), but I haven't spent any time looking into civic literacy. Jennifer forwarded me papers and proceedings from a recent IFLA (International Federation of Library Associations) conference: http://www.lnb.lv/iflariga2012/papers-and-proceedings The theme of the conference was "Information for civic literacy." After a quick glance at some abstracts, I see lots of connections to service-learning, civic engagement, lifelong learning and information literacy. Now, if I could only find time to read them more closely, I'd have something brilliant to write here rather than just sharing the link.
